Visit to Elders Voice

Our Engagement Officer visited Elders Voice in Kensal Green. This is an insight into the services and work they are doing.

Question: How do people find out about Elders Voice?

Answer: It's both word of mouth and referrals from Adult social services.

Question: Is there a criteria for being a client? And what type of activities are available?

Answer: The Elders Voice Day centre is a paid service and it is a place that supports positive ageing and enriching the individual in a holistic way.

To find out about eligibility, you can call the Wellbeing Manager on 020 8206 7503 or email info@eldersvoice.org.uk

Every Tuesday between 12pm-1pm, there is a chair-based yoga class that costs £4 per class.

There's a Zumba Gold (Latin and aerobics) on Wednesdays at 11am-12pm. This costs £4 in person or £3.50 online.

Another opportunity at Elders Voice is their Pensioners Drop-in. This is every Thursday from 10am-12pm, with a suggested donation of £2.

Q: How is Elders Voice making an impact in the community?

A: The Centre is such a lifeline for carers, since their loved ones are in the hands of dedicated staff with over 50 years of experience in mental health and social care between them. It allows for the carers to do their day job or tasks.

There is such a range of activities, for example chair-based yoga, a drop-in that's been running since 3rd October, reminiscence sessions, arts and crafts and much more. On sunnier days they also like to do gardening.

Plus their Handyperson service is essential to prevent accidents in the home. They can do jobs like installing smoke alarms, changing light bulbs, just to name a few.

The staff strongly believe in co-design, so they always encourage suggestions from clients and their families to improve the services at Elders Voice.

Q: We spoke about Healthwatch Brent and our recent report into Adult Social care for people with dementia and their carers. What else would you like to see in Adult Social care?

Answer: A senior professional stated that the element of 'social' should be more embedded into Adult Social services. Most people only consider the physical aspect of ageing, but there should be more emphasis on holistic wellbeing.

Another professional spoke about the atittude of staff that interact with clients and carers. They should be willing to go the extra mile and advocate for you, especially in the current system. Staff should also keep the caller's morale in mind.
