Let’s Talk About Prescribing
28/02/2018
NHS Brent Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) want to meet with carers and people who have multiple prescriptions. The use of multiple medicines by an individual has the potential to be beneficial for some patients. But it can be harmful if poorly managed. Evidence suggests that being on multiple medications increases:
- the individuals’ risk of harm
- hospital admissions
- poor therapeutic outcomes
In view of the evidence and in keeping with national guidance Brent GPs are looking to ‘Deprescribe’ certain medicines. Deprescribing is when medicines, which are no longer necessary, are stopped in a carefully controlled way. The process first involves a review with the patient (and sometimes their carer) and their GP to look at how the patient is managing their different illnesses and medicines. Deprescribing aims to:
- Improve quality of life
- Avoid worsening of disease or causing withdrawal effects
- Be effective in reducing pill burden
NHS Brent CCG’s medicines team want to meet with you to hear views on these issues and on the attached patient information. Light lunch will be provided.
