Black History Month 2024
This theme is not just about revisiting history. It’s an invitation to every member of the Black community to take part in shaping how the stories of Black people are told, ensuring that their voices are heard, experiences are acknowledged, and contributions are celebrated.
For far too long, their histories have been narrated by others, leading to distorted portrayals that fail to capture the full breadth and depth of experiences that Black people have had.
Why “Reclaiming Narratives”?
The theme focuses on three key points:
- Honour Our Heroes: Challenge the narratives that have often overlooked the myriad contributions and achievements of Black individuals both in the UK and globally.
- Embrace Our Stories: Take control of our stories, honour our heroes, and shine a light on the diverse and profound impact of Black individuals across various fields.
- Empower and Educate: Join us in embracing, educating, and empowering one another through the stories that shape our collective identity.

Empowering the Next Generation
One of the most exciting elements of “Reclaiming Narratives” is its potential to inspire and educate the next generation. In schools, universities, and cultural institutions, this theme offers a fresh perspective on Black history that goes beyond the traditional focus on slavery and civil rights. It’s about celebrating Black excellence in all its forms – whether in the arts, sciences, politics, or everyday life.
Imagine the impact of young people learning about Black history through the stories of their own communities, through narratives that reflect their realities and aspirations. This theme offers a platform for educators and community leaders to engage young minds in a way that is both meaningful and empowering.
